Media Release - The Honourable Stephen Mc Clashie, Minister of Labour addresses the 111th Session of the International Labour Conference 2023 in Geneva

The Honourable Stephen Mc Clashie, Minister of Labour is leading the Trinidad and Tobago delegation at the 111th Session of the International Labour Conference, taking place from June 12 to 16, 2023, in Geneva, Switzerland. The Minister of Labour addressed the morning Plenary Session on Tuesday, June 13, 2023. 

The Minister of Labour referenced Vision 2030’s theme of ‘Putting People First’ as it relates to grounding Trinidad Tobago’s society in the principles of social justice.  He stated that “there are a number of policies and legislation which currently address non-discrimination and social inclusion in Trinidad and Tobago. To name a few, they include: The Equal Opportunity Act, the National Policy on Persons with Disabilities, the Maternity Protection Act and the National Insurance Act. Minister Mc Clashie reiterated that Trinidad and Tobago remains committed to promoting decent work and advancing social justice.”

This Conference is held annually and convenes to discuss varying labour issues and standards that should be adopted by the 187 Member States of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). Worker, employer and government delegates tackle a wide range of issues with a focus this year on a just transition towards sustainable and inclusive economies, quality apprenticeships, and social protection.

Members of the delegation include Ms. Rosa-Mae Whittier, Director International Affairs Unit of the Ministry of Labour, representing Government; Mr. Michael Annisette, General Secretary, National Trade Union Centre (NATUC) representing workers and Mr. Ronald Ramlogan, Chief Executive Officer – Employers Consultative Association of Trinidad and Tobago representing employers.

142 Trainees graduated from the On the Job Training Division’s Leadership Development Series (TLDS) through a partnership with Mr Jason Charles who is a certified Maxwell Leadership Facilitator/ Coach. This graduation ceremony was held on Tuesday, December 13th 2022, at the Cipriani College of Labour and Cooperative Studies under the theme ‘Becoming a Person of Influence.’

The objective of the TLDS was to empower participants to improve their interpersonal skills, build their confidence and provide them with the information that is needed to navigate the work environment to becoming no ordinary worker but “a person of influence”.
