Media Release - Minister of Labour re-appoints the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Authority Board

 

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago - Wednesday 04 May 2023

The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Authority Board has been re-appointed. Members of this newly constituted OSH Authority Board were presented with their letters of appointment by the Minister of Labour, the Honourable Stephen Mc Clashie. This ceremony took place on Wednesday, May 03 2023 at the Ministry of Labour’s Head Office, International Waterfront Towers, Port of Spain.

The Chairman of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Authority is Mr. Curt Cadet and the Deputy Chairman is Mr. Christopher Hagley. 

Addressing the newly appointed members of the Board, Minister of Labour the Honourable Stephen Mc Clashie said the OSH Authority is one of the most important Boards in this country as its work centers on a key piece of labour legislation, the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act, Chapter 88:08 He stated “given that members are all well acquainted with the fields of safety, health and welfare standards, it is only necessary for me to remind you of the great responsibility you bear as members of this Authority to operate in the interest of the well-being of the citizens of this nation in a wide  range of industrial establishments, ensuring standards are maintained within the legal compliance requirements in accordance with Sections 66 and 67 of the OSH Act.”

Minister Mc Clashie reminded the Appointees that all Members of the ILO including Trinidad and Tobago, now have an obligation to respect, to promote and to realize, in good faith and in accordance with the ILO Constitution, the principles concerning the fundamental right to a safe and healthy working environment. He added, “the high importance of these principles to this Government is reflected by the careful selection of each member to be able to carry out the mandate of the Authority.”

In accepting the appointment, the Chairman of the OSH Authority, Mr Curt Cadet said the opportunity to serve is being taken seriously and he assured that the new Board is committed to ensuring its work benefits all workers in Trinidad and Tobago. 

Members of the new Board are as follows: Mr. Curt Cadet Chairman, Mr. Cristopher Hagley Deputy Chairman, Ms. Carolyn Sancho, Mr. Farouk Mohammed, Dr. Wayne Ramgoolam, Mr. Kendal Dolly, Mr. José Trejo, Ms. Marisa Ann Bhawanie, Mr. Farzan Ali, Mr. Christopher Alcazar, Mr. Ceron Richards, Mr. Deryck Richardson, Mr. Roger Camacho, Ms. Jacqueline Burgess, Mr. Jason Maitland, Mr. Maurice Wishart and Ms. Roshini Aguilar, Secretary.

The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Authority was established in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Chapter 88:08. The mandates of the OSH Authority, as stipulated in Section 66(1) and (2) of the OSH Act as follows: 

  • “to assist and encourage persons concerned with matters relevant to any of the general purposes of this Act to further those purposes;
  • to make such arrangements as it considers appropriate for the carrying out of research, the publication of the results of research and the provision of training and information in that connection with those purposes, and to encourage research and the provision of training and information in that connection by others;
  • to make such arrangements as it considers appropriate for securing that government departments, employers, employees, organizations representing employers and employees respectively, and other persons concerned with matters relevant to any of those purposes are provided with an information and advisory service and are kept informed of, and adequately advised on, such matters;
  • to perform such acts and functions in accordance with the law to enforce the provisions of this Act;
  • to submit from time to time to the Minister such proposals as the Authority considers appropriate for the making of Regulations under this Act; and
  • to advise the Minister on the organizational structure, staff requirements and operations for the proper and efficient functioning of the Agency.
