Media Release - Organisations commit to developing Workplace Policies on HIV and AIDS with the assistance of the Ministry of Labour’s HIV Workplace Advocacy Unit

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago - Tuesday 6 April, 2021

Four organisations took the step to provide further protection and support for their workers by entering into Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Labour on addressing HIV and AIDS as a workplace issue. TECU Credit Union Co-operative Society Limited, SERVOL, The Red House and Neighboring Department Credit Union Co-operative Society (RHAND) and ECOTOX Environmental Services Limited (ECOTOX), each signed the MOU at the Ministry of Labour’s Head Office in Port of Spain on March 25th 2021.

These organisations will be provided with technical support and training by the HIV Workplace Advocacy Unit (HWAU) of the Ministry, whose mandate is to implement the National Workplace Policy on HIV and AIDS.

In her remarks, Permanent Secretary (Ag.), Ministry of Labour, Ms. Natalie Willis articulated that the Ministry is pleased to collaborate with organisations to develop their respective workplace policies to treat with HIV and AIDS as these policies were integral in the social and economic development of organisations and communities.

Manager of the HWAU, Ms. Heather Rodney, commended all organisations for signing the Memoranda of Understanding which seek to: ensure the organisations’ ownership and sustainability of the HIV and AIDS workplace programme; establish procedures to manage HIV and AIDS in the workplace; encourage HIV and AIDS prevention, non-discrimination, care, treatment and support, and to inform workers about available resources in the community.

All representing organisations have pledged their commitment to continued collaboration with the HWAU of the MOL to ensure that they adopt and implement the National Workplace Policy on HIV and AIDS.
